Resiliency Rule 09 - Have a growth mindset.

Matthew 19:26
26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Last summer a read a powerful book by Carol Dweck called Mindset. This professor from Stanford University has been transformational in the lives of her students and those who have read her book. Take a moment to see how you might respond to the following situation.

A father is outside playing a form of ping pong called “California Pin Pong or Around the World.”  His daughter is called out in the game and she sets the ping pong paddle down in frustration and walks off.

How do you handle this situation?

A) I thought you were the best.
B) You were robbed in the match.
C) Ping Pong is not that important.
D) Don’t worry you will win next time.
E) You did not earn it…

Look at the following resources to formulate your answer.

A) I thought you were the best.
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. - Proverbs 27:2
Were they the best? Is that an sincere and genuine statement? There is a process that God works in us and through us.  Good things take time.

B) You were robbed in the match.
Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. - Romans 12:15
Do you want to teach a “blame others / be a victim” mentality?  We can grow through adversity and grieve a loss and still be happy for the others who won.

C) Ping Pong is not that important.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31
Why devalue something just because they do not do well?  We do everything for God’s glory.  Winning and loosing included.

D) Don’t worry you will win next time.
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will callon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. - Jeremiah 29:11-13
Does ability alone get you to the top?  Sometimes others just simply play better.

E) You did not earn it…
Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” - Jeremiah 29:7
You did not earn it “Yet.” This promotes a growth mindset… the power of the word “Yet.”

Our hope is in Christ and his promise.  "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6
